The <i>Road Dogs</i> of this novel’s title are Jack Foley and Cundo Rey, two guys who agree to watch either other’s back in prison. Cundo has access to lots of money and arranges for Foley’s 30-year prison term to be shortened so that he gets an immediate release. The partners make their way to Cundo’s Venice Beach home where his girlfriend Dawn Navarro has been waiting for him. Cundo is excessively jealous and believes she was faithful while he was incarcerated. Dawn, however, wants Cundo’s money and is willing to sleep with anyone who might help her with her plan. Foley is a bank robber itching to do what he does best. The three of them in close proximity leads to mistrust, double crosses, and violence, as each can’t give up what they really want. Elmore Leonard’s novel has received positive reviews with the New York Times saying, “Mr. Leonard, now 83, still writes with high style, great energy, unflappable cool and a jubilant love of the game.”
